Apart from the beautiful house and ever improving gardens, not to mention the excellent farm shop and restaurants, doddington is always worth a revisit for the exhibitions they put on in the summer, usually linked in some way to textiles.Last year was the lovely embroidered garden exhibition;But this year it is wedding dresses, so of course unmissable for me. Unfortunately there was no photography allowed in the house, so no pictures of mine from the actual exhibition here;But it was extensive and interesting. A highlight Ball Gown Wedding Dresses was the 1922 gown of princess mary, the previous princess royal, shown here. The dress was displayed laid horizontally in a glass case and was much darkened by time, having a silver lame under dress and embroidered with silver thread too, but it was still fascinating to see. An unusual dress was this one made entirely of wool from lincolnshire longwool sheep, worn by a local shepherdess at her wedding.There were also two knitted dresses, although only one had been Australia worn by a local artist at a knitted wedding their guests had been advised to eat before they attended, as the wedding buffet, as well as most of the outfits, the bouquets and decorations, had also been knitted! I really loved several gowns, including a long white riding coat, designed to be worn, on a horse, over white jodphurs and specially made satin riding boots!
